Glowing iron at the historic forge

Action Day

Historic Blacksmithing Day at the Museum.

The Crafts Museum Ovelgönne invites you to a very special experience. On this action day the historic outdoor forge is fired up and the ancient art of metalworking comes back to life.

To the rhythm of hammer blows, our volunteer experts show how useful tools, fittings and horseshoes were once made from rigid metal. Visitors have the unique opportunity to watch the masters at work and to feel the extreme heat of the fire from close up.

Hands-On Craftsmanship

This day will be especially unforgettable for our younger guests. Under expert supervision and with strict safety precautions, interested children and young people can try their hand at the hammer themselves. Shaping a small piece from glowing iron gives a deep respect for the achievements of earlier generations of craftspeople.

In addition to the forge demonstration, all rooms of the permanent exhibition in the Bürgerhaus are open as normal on this day. Members of the Heimat- und Kulturverein will be on hand in the various historic workshops to answer questions and share fascinating stories from Ovelgönne's past.

No advance registration is required. We do recommend arriving early, as the hands-on activities are particularly popular with families. Refreshments and cold drinks will be available.
