Glowing iron at the historic forge

Hands-on & Demonstration

Historic Blacksmithing Day at the Museum.

On 12 September 2026 our volunteer blacksmith Sönke will fire up the historic forge in the museum courtyard. Everyone is welcome to watch him work and to try their own hand at the anvil.

Sönke joined the museum's volunteer team at International Museum Day 2026, where his debut at the forge drew crowds of all ages. In the historic smithy he shows how glowing iron is shaped into something useful with hammer and anvil, how the metal changes colour in the fire and how you know exactly when the moment to strike is right. Real craftsmanship, live in front of you.

Try It Yourself

Anyone who wants to can do more than just watch. Under Sönke's guidance, every interested visitor gets the chance to work the hot iron and take home a small piece they made themselves. No prior experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to have a go.
